Creating Film Grain
Recently Peter did a video explaining why he doesn't shoot film anymore, and in this video he mentioned that he has created film grain overlays that he uses on his digital images. We have a full in depth tutorial of this along with 8 film grains available to download on Inspire, but here is a quick run through of how Peter creates and uses the grains.

    Hello. Absolutely love your content. You two have helped my photography no end…. I have an idea, for a lot of us who are still new to the profession. Would you be interested in Peter doing a video explaining terminology and what they mean? I think it would help a lot when watching videos and listening to Peter justice settings. Just an idea. Keep up the great work cheers.

    Great, it's a win when the photographer doesn't have to constantly guide the model into poses. You only need to have your finger ready on the trigger, check the composition and wait for the right shot. Great job Peter, awesome model. Bec is beautiful as always.

    Very interesting to watch the differences made from one modifier to the next, especially adding the small central diffuser! I never expected it to add a stop of exposure. I'm not a fan of the alien spacecraft look to the specular highlight, but maybe if I saw it in person on my own monitor I could better appreciate it. Thanks again, Peter!

    The relationship that you two have forged is incredible, like father/daughter, brother/sister, lifelong friends, battle buddies. It made me smile from the beginning to the end!! It also is great instruction to a photographer to create a relationship that is fun, beneficial for both model and photographer. I so enjoyed watching you both, Peter you got some great moves and poses!! 🙂

    Many thanks for this new video. @Bec: Many thanks for introducing and closing the video. @Peter: Many thanks for explaining and demonstrating how you produce film-like images, decoupling the Model image itself from the film grain look, that mean to combine advantages of both worlds: digital and film, minimising the impact on the Model availability (no additional effort) and on the photographer activities (no significant effort)

    Cool but I don't think it works like that. On film there is more grain in the highs than on the shadows. Adding grain over all frame is cooler than digital added grain, but it's still not how it works.

    • @PeterCoulsonPhotographer
      @PeterCoulsonPhotographer 3 дні тому

      "On film there is more grain in the highs than on the shadows" sorry no

    • @Camaro-it8ht
      @Camaro-it8ht 3 дні тому

      @@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Here's a breakdown: Film negative development and emulsion: During the development process, areas of the film negative that were exposed to light (shadows) retain some emulsion, but less than brighter areas, leading to less visible grain. Completely unexposed areas (absolute black, like the film frame with no light leaks) will have all the emulsion removed, resulting in no grain at all in those parts of the film. Digital processing (Photoshop/Lightroom, etc): When you zoom into these areas in Photoshop, you won’t see grain in the absolute black areas (the film frame with no light leaks) because there’s no emulsion left to create it. Shadows still have some grain, though less than midtones or highlights. Uniform grain at 80% grey: A photo taken at 80% grey will have grain uniformly across the frame because the exposure is even, and the emulsion is distributed evenly. Overlaying the grain: When this uniformly grainy image is used as an Overlay in Photoshop, it will add grain to all areas of a digital photo, including the absolute blacks, which wouldn't naturally have grain.

    Thanks for this, Peter. I have no particular allegiance to a brand and I really appreciate seeing what different focal lengths/f-stops/distance to subject actually does for a photo, not what Brand A or B's particular lens does. Tech question: You mentioned that the images were jpegs with no (?) post editing . . . how is it that Ra Ra's eyes seem to "glow". Good genetics and/or proper technique?

    I love it! Peter maybe a little offtopic but i been wondering about this for a while. What are the exact words/wording you use when you let the models see the images you made. Like when you did a full shoot and you show the models the images and you want to get some of their input on what they like. I am not sure how to word that to not come across as if they are making the selection. I keep telling them that i do the final selection and that also often means i will pick images that havent said they liked, but how do you tell them that :D

    • @PeterCoulsonPhotographer
      @PeterCoulsonPhotographer 3 дні тому

      At the end of the shoot I just let the models pick all the pictures they like and tell them that's just so I can see what they liked from the shoot, I never say these are the pictures I'm going to use though.

    I noticed your using image edge to tether then later use lighroom when editing. you probably know this already but Lightroom recently got an update that now allows native tethering with Sony cameras to work. Before you had to do messing about with plugins and third party apps or use image edge with a watch folder, now you can just use lightroom on its own to tether.

    What a great process! I love shooting film too, but the digital workflow is so much more efficient. I won't do more than 1-3 rolls of film on a shoot, and do the rest on digital. I use SilverFX for the B&W conversion, but overlaying your own film grains is an awesome idea!
